This bowl is about 3½ inches in diameter and about 2¼ high.  It is made from Bubinga which comes from West Africa.  Its botanical name is "Guibourtia demeusei".   It is also known as African Rosewood.   The tree can reach a moderate size, some 100ft in height and producing a long straight trunk about 3ft 3in in diameter.

The finish is achieved by sanding while spinning on the lathe with every grade of sandpaper from 80grit (course) right up to 1200grit (ultra fine) and then 0000grade wire wool (this grade is a lot finer than what you'd use to clean your pans).   Then applying 2 coats of sanding sealer wire wooled between each coat and lastly, a coat of friction polish.

The picture on the right shows the size difference between the Sapele Plate and an average size mug.
